Alabama ranks fifth in the nation for the proportion of farmland owned by foreigners, according to a USDA report

About 5.1 percent of Alabama's agricultural property -- about 1.4 million acres -- is owned by foreigners, according to the report.  At 15.7 percent, Maine had the highest concentration of foreign-owned agricultural land, followed by Hawaii (8.8 percent), Washington (7.6 percent) and Nevada (5.2 percent).

Most of the 22 million acres in which foreigners hold an interest is forest land.  Canadians own the most acreage in the country, followed by The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
