Press release from Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team

OLYMPIA, WA - 9/12/02–The Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team’s (Action Team) advisory organization, the Puget Sound Council, will host a regional meeting in Port Hadlock this month to talk with Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap county residents about protecting and improving the health of Puget Sound.

The Puget Sound Council’s regional meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26th, at Washington State University Cooperative Extension -- Jefferson County’s office, 201 West Patison St., in Port Hadlock, from 10 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m.

“This is the first of several meetings the Council is planning around the Sound,” said Scott Redman, acting chair for the Action Team. “We want to hear directly from people living and working in these communities about what they are doing to improve Puget Sound and what they need from the Council and Action Team to continue their work.”

Speakers at the Council meeting will include representatives from the following organizations:

· Dungeness River Management Team, a long-standing watershed planning body on the North Olympic Peninsula;

· Point No Point Treaty Council, an organization which supports the work of the Skokomish, Port Gamble, Lower Elwha Klallam, and Jamestown S’Klallam tribes;

· Kitsap County Stormwater Management Program; and the

· Hood Canal Coordinating Council, a council of governments that includes Jefferson, Kitsap and Mason counties, Port Gamble S’Klallam and Skokomish tribes, Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups and various state and federal agencies.

The Council will also hear about the progress being made by recent Public Involvement and Education Fund (PIE) contractors in the region. The PIE program provides funding to local communities to help motivate environmental stewardship and empower people to solve local pollution problems.

The Council is made up of representatives from business, agriculture, the shellfish industry, environmental organizations, local and tribal governments and the legislature, and it advises the Action Team, a state organization charged with developing and carrying out activities for the Sound.
