Clallam County Fair manager dies

January 5th, 2006

KONP News

(Port Angeles) -- Clallam County's long-time Fair Manager Sandy Bailey died yesterday after a long battle with cancer.

Bailey was the fair manager for 23 years, the last 15 as a full-time employee of the Clallam County Parks Department. Prior to 1991, the fairgrounds in Port Angeles was operated by a non-profit fair association.

Bailey was involved in the fair for years prior to her taking the reins as manager in 1983, working as a volunteer and a 4-H building superintendent. Clallam County Public Works Director Craig Jacobs says part of Bailey's legacy includes the transition of the Fairgrounds from a venue used for a single annual event to a facility used by the community year-round.

Jacobs says eventually a new fair manager will be recruited, but they'll never be able to fill the shoes of someone's who had been with the fair for 23 years. Memorial services for Bailey haven't been announced.
