Repeal Code and replace with more friendly guidelines, says repeal initiative signature gatherer Dear
Clallam County, I collected signatures for the initiative repeal of the Clallam County Critical Areas Code (CAC) to go to the vote this fall. You may be interested to know that most people signed and did so gladly. Within this group it was not unusual to have some inform me of others they knew that were adversely affected by the current CAC. A smaller number of the signers also vented personal grievances regarding the code’s strictness. The next largest group was the uninformed. Here many agreed with the general premise that our county government has gone too far with the regulation of private land, yet, did not know enough about this particular issue to sign the petition. The next largest group, I’m sad to report, was the unregistered voter group. Encouragingly, however, some of these promised to register when told the historical fact that Hitler ascended to power by one deciding vote. (As we know a similar occurrence almost took place during our own last presidential election). The next group, (about five of the several hundred total persons I spoke with), claimed to be informed about the CAC and refused to sign, i. e., they think the code should not be repealed. Now I’m not saying that my experience was a pure
representative sample of our county; these folks were predominately Port
Angeles residents. But I
will venture that the majority of informed voters see the obvious,
overly strict, and unfair nature of the current CAC.
Nevertheless we have this code serving a disproportionate few
while plaguing the many. Its
time to repeal this “CAC” and replace it with more friendly
