(Port Angeles) -- Incumbent county commissioner Steve Tharinger says he'll run again. Tharinger announced yesterday he would go for a second term on the commission representing the east end of the county. Tharinger says he has made progress improving the county's economy and improving the environment.

Sue Forde has announced her candidacy to challenge Tharinger on the Republican side. Official filing for offices doesn't start until next month.

Meantime, Forde told the Port Angeles Business Association yesterday if elected she'd question continuing support for the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Forde told the group she thought it was a "boondoggle" and questioned whether the amount of tax dollars spent is justified by the number of people actually using the trail.

Forde says she is not against the trail, but has questions about how it would expand without violating property rights.

The county has leveraged federal money to pay for most of the trail that runs from Port Angeles through Sequim and is planned to continue east and west through the county.

Forde was making her first official campaign appearance since announcing her candidacy almost two months ago.
