Residents Anticipate Increased Taxes For Reclaimed Water

by Lois Krafsky-Perry

Sequim, WA - The City of Sequim has been approved for a loan at zero interest to be repaid over a twenty-year period. The money will be used to construct waste facilities to produce Class A reclaimed water. The $5,324,000 loan has been received from the Department of Ecology for final design specifications, permitting and construction of the plant upgrade. The project will cost local taxpayers $266,200 per year.

In partnership with the Washington Department of Ecology and the Washington State Department of Health, The City plans to protect and conserve the Sequim water supply, and to provide 100% upland discharge of the reclaimed water. Sequim is using reclaimed water for non-drinking purposes. Human consumption is not permitted, but bodily contact is permitted with Class A reclaimed water. There are four classes of reclaimed water, (A through D). Class A is the highest level in purity which makes it suitable for most uses except potable (domestic) use.

The elimination of wastewater discharge to marine waters to protect the quality of marine resources and a supplemental water source to accommodate community needs are primary reasons the project was selected for Sequim.
Suggested uses for the water from the reclamation facility are: constructed wetlands, stream enhancement and recharge of the groundwater aquifer, irrigation for parks, golf courses, and immediate area.

The Wastewater Reuse Task Force meets at the Sequim Community Center and is working to identify the best pilot reuse projects. Citizens are encouraged to attend. For more information contact James Bay at the Sequim City Hall Phone 360-683-4908.
