Gill nets make for an uneven playing field

To the Editor,

After releasing my second native (unclipped) steelhead on the Elwha River Monday due to the emergency closure by Fisheries Dept., I was not really very surprised to see several Indian gill nets in the river at Sisson Hole and above. Another very illustrative example of the uneven playing field between tribal and non-tribal and the tribe's total disregard for the resource. This same scenario could be seen on most any other river on the west end since the closure went into effect. Maybe they have developed a gill net that only catches hatchery fish and haven't told anyone.
