"We must make this an insecure and inhospitable place for capitalists
and their projects.... We must reclaim the roads and plowed land,
halt dam construction, tear down existing dams, free shackled rivers
and return to wilderness millions of tens of millions of acres of
presently settled land."—David Foreman, Earth First!
Wilderness is a fundamental element of American tradition. At least
from the time of colonial settlement, the presence of untamed nature
has served as a catalyst not only for American opportunity, but as
a source of American dreams. The westward push across the continent
offered escape as well as it did challenge. It promised peace as well
as adventure. Wilderness became ingrained in the American psyche as
among no other population of the world.
