Hazel Green farmer Dennis Bragg showed off Thursday how he can use his own crops to power farm equipment, and maybe help break America from its addiction to petroleum.

Bragg demonstrated how biodiesel fuel, a sort of "vegetable oil" made from soybeans and other components, can be used as an alternative to petroleum-based fuel. The demonstration at Bragg Farms was paid for by a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, according to a news release from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.

The Madison County Commission is also testing biodiesel fuel in its District 1 fleet, thanks to a grant from the Alabama Soybean Association.
