Yakima: Dept. of Ecology fines businesses $674,400 for 'hazardous violations' in 3rd quarter

YAKIMA, WA - 10/31/01 -- In the most recent report put out by the Washington State Department of Ecology, $674,400 in fines were issued to companies throughout the state for various hazardous violations from July through September.

In Union Gap, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. was fined $10,000 on Aug. 16 for spilling diesel fuel during a train derailment, the department said.

The railroad company was not cited for anything else during the three-month period.

Thirty-one other companies were also fined during the department's quarter. The largest fine was for $114,000 given to Burlington Environmental Inc. in Kent on Aug. 6 for mismanaging dangerous wastes. That company was fined two other times for the same type of violation during the quarter. It was fined a total of $230,000.

This year, the Department of Ecology has issued $1,183,700 in fines.
