| Commissioners set two more hearings on watershed plan 9/29/04 Clallam County commissioners say they want to hear more people… and especially from East End residents before deciding what to do with a controversial watershed management plan. Commissioners faced one of the largest crowds they’d seen in a couple of years last week when they held the first public hearing into the Elwha-Dungeness Watershed Plan, … also known as the WRIA 18 plan. The massive document had been under development for the better part of 4-years and already had the endorsement of many of the participating government agencies. But opponents, including realtors, developers and well drillers, are worried the so-called “guidelines” will just lead to more government regulations and are based on shaky scientific data. Monday, commissioners discussed the next step in a work session and decided they should give people an additional chance to comment on the plan before deciding whether it should be adopted, revised or rejected… Commissioners scheduled a second public hearing on the plan for Wednesday, October 6th at 6pm in the Guy Cole Convention Center at Carrie Blake Park. The board also set a third, and “final” opportunity for testimony at the commissioner’s regular meeting on October 12th at 10:30am at the courthouse. October 12th will also be the deadline for written comment. If you’d like to read for yourself what all the fuss is about, copies of the plan are available at the courthouse, the Sequim and PA public libraries and on-line at the county’s website, www.clallam.net.
